“Hills like White Elephants” is a short story that can be read in a few minutes. But it is necessary to read several times to catch every intonation, memorize every word, every cue. It’s just an overheard conversation – an American and his companion. We will never know the name of the man, but the girl’s name is Jig. They’re talking about murder. No, they are not runaway criminals, and they do not even plan to kill anyone. They are discussing the murder of a child – abortion. There are no direct words about this, but everything is very clear from the dialogue. There is two people, two lovers, two participants in conceiving, where everyone has their own point of view. Abortion is not an easy topic, discussions can be nervous and lengthy, but only one thing is clear: in any case, an act that does not justify it is a person’s decision to destroy someone who cannot do anything about it.
The whole story is like an accidentally overheard conversation. As if we were sitting at a nearby table and watching the young lady and her adult companion. A train arrives and they leave the station cafe, leaving us the opportunity to come up with the beginning of their history and its continuation…
